I have heard people argue both sides of how much paperwork to keep. "I have three file cabinets where you'll find everything you need." OR "It's all online, I don't need to keep any paper documents."
I argue the middle ground. Nobody needs three file cabinets - you just don't! It's too much, and I am quite certain that if someone needs to go through it, the trash will be the first bucket to fill up. On the other hand, even if you have docs saved online (which is great), you won't be throwing away your birth certificate, or social security card, or vehicle title - you just won't!
Some type of paper trail is still needed to help a loved one with changed circumstances, or in the case of death, help close out their life. Do you know where they bank? Do you know where the spare car keys are located? How about the monthly bills? These are basic questions you may want to ask yourself and your loved ones. Don't leave your loved ones buried in papers or stranded with no lifeline!
