Each area of our country has its own specialty of natural disaster. Our mountain area used to have severe blizzards in the winter and hail in the spring and summer. Now we can add fires, floods and an occasional tornado. Sometimes you have decent warning and can watch the progression of the storm or fire. Other times you are running out of the home with nothing.
When you are in between emergencies, it's easy to become complacent. But this is the time to prepare for the next crisis. There are many things you can do to get ready. If you have to evacuate, you at least have a little peace of mind that you are prepared as you can be in the moment. Channel your energy of the fight, flight or freeze response.
Make a list of things to take with you on the way out - two lists! One if you have no time and another if there is time to gather more items.
Take an emergency preparedness class, this can give you a better idea on important tips and things you haven't considered.
Take photos or videos of the inside and outside of your home. This will help with insurance claims and any disaster funds you could receive.
Become informed on building codes and landscaping suggestions for your region. Most of us cannot afford a total overhaul of our home, but it is possible to make little changes to possibly stem off something worse happening to our place.
Make sure you have the local emergency alert system on your phone. This is a fast and accurate way to get weather/evacuation updates for your area.
