Realities of Downsizing

Updated: 5 days ago

When it is time to downsize, which should have started yesterday - turn your heart to stone and look at your stuff objectively. Your memory of an object is yours alone, it cannot be forced upon someone else. Here are a few realities of downsizing to keep in mind:

  1. Who Wants It?

It's special to you, but do your kids feel the same way? You may be able to donate it to someone who will make their own memories with the item. Be realistic on the monetary and emotional value. If you need a neutral third party to help, professional organizers are a wonderful resource. If you take the time to get this item to the right person or location, it will have a better chance of surviving. Your children will not have the time to discuss every belonging in your home.

  2. Who is Moving It?

Do you have kids with really strong backs? Can you afford a moving company to transport your possessions from one location to the next? Is it worth it to put your stuff in a storage unit? (Answer: No! After six months of storage fees, you could have purchased brand new things. Instead, your six months out of cash and still have the stuff.)

  3. How to Downsize?

Start with the most hopeful option - you can sell it. Estate auctions can work if you have an entire property's worth of stuff. For most of us a garage sale or online sites (eBay or Facebook marketplace) will work to sell individual items. The next option is donation to thrift stores. They are becoming stricter on what they will accept, so check ahead before you drive over a heavy piece of furniture. You can also leave it at the edge of your driveway with a sign marked Free. This is actually very effective! The last option is throwing it away. Unfortunately, this may be the most realistic option.

Good luck, I know it isn't easy! All the effort that you put into downsizing now will be gratefully accepted by your loved ones. We can't help with the stamp collection, but we can help with your stacks of paper! Message or call to discuss your documentation goals.
